The Planets!

Today Miss M & I went to see a children's show. Put on by the East Hillside Children's Theater Group (a summer camp) at the "Coppertop Church." Miss M had seen this play the other day but when I brought it up she said she wanted to see it again (she knew some kids in it and thought it was "really funny." so we went!

The play was very cute. They told us about the planet and our universe and what would happen if the earth was hotter or Mercury went out of it's orbit. They sang songs and did hand-stomping-finger-snapping-numbers. All in all a very nice little production.

Miss M seemed to enjoy it again. After we left the building though she proclaimed, "that play made me HUUUUUUUUNGRY." Too cute.

Next up: Spirit Valley Days parade.

Mentor Duluth BBQ

On Thursday I met Miss M and her family (her mom & brother) at Bayfront Festival Park for the annual Mentor Duluth BBQ. There was food, games, activites, silliness, it was a good time.

I also met Miss M's Dad for the first time (he came later). He was not at all what I expected and I will be honest, I'm pleasantly surprised. I think he's had some rough times (to say the least) but it really seems like he has a great rapport with his kids and is trying to stabilize his life.

Let's see...we played with a parachute, learned how to cast a fishing pole, spun the "sucker" wheel (basically a wheel where you get a sucker), did the book/cookie walk a few times, played catch with the football, Miss M got a monkey tattoo on her arm and we did a lot of cartwheels and general running around.

It was a hot & beautiful summery day and fun was had by all.

(I'm having trouble posting any pictures - from my Mac, from my PC, from Netscape, IE , Firefox & Safari - any one having any luck?!?!)

Hiking at Chester

On Friday I called Miss M's mother to see if 4 o'clock on Sunday would be an okay time for me to pick her up. Since Miss M was right there, I talked to her as well.

"Do you want to go for a hike on Sunday?"

"YEAH!"

And so there ya go.

I picked her up at about 4pm and after a little tie-up-shoe & socks scavenger hunt we hit the road. I parked in our usual spot outside of the Chester Park entrance on 4th street. It's my favorite place to park for this particular hike. You can go up one side and come down the other. I like doing the hard bit first. Makes the 2nd half of the hike much better.

We put our shoes & socks on (we were both previously attired in sandals) and hit the trail. She was a chatterbox yesterday! I was hoping to get her interested in some of the natural beauty that is all over Duluth and to experience such a lovely trail and talk about the trees, the plants, the creatures, etc...but she had other plans. She talked about squirrels (and how she told a boy that they chase humans if you spit in their holes) (!), she talked about her new teddy bear, she talked about her favorite food (ice cream), she talked about her Dad, she talked about eating fresh raspberries, she talked about her day-camp, she talked about...well, a variety of subjects. Man that girl's got energy!

She did pretty good as it's a rather intense (but short) hike. It was hot though and at one point she said "I'm thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirsty." And I said "really?" and although I think she was playing me a little bit (she had remembered my previous promise of a water bottle) she said "do you have a water bottle for me?" Which of course I did and she loved it and enjoyed the ice cold water too.

When we got to the top, we climbed on rocks, took some pictures and I introduced her to the wonders of TRAIL MIX! She particularly likes the fake M&M's and the sesame sticks but also enjoyed making "sandwiches" and combining the ingredients (with raisins). She wanted nothing to do with the peanuts (she doesn't like them) but was willing to try a cashew when one turned up (she didn't like that either). Ah well, more nuts for me! we hung out on the rocks and talked (!) a bit longer and then headed down.

Our hike lasted about 1 1/2 hours which is a pretty good outing for a girl who doesn't hike.

From there we headed to Sammy's Pizza for a little dinner. 1/4 Hawaiian (her choice), 1/4 sausage (my choice) and 1/2 cheese (our mutual choice). It was delicious and the company was good too. I let her have mello yello and I hope she didn't turn into a total spazz when she got home due to excess sugar but I"m pretty sure her diet isn't regimented anyway - and I felt like just relaxing and enjoying our dinner and having her pick what she wanted was part of that.

At one point during dinner she said "Everything is made in China. Well, not everything but almost everything is made in China," with rather a disgusted look on her face. I have no idea what prompted such a statement but I wanted to say "yes! You're right! let's bring manufacturing back to the United States and support our own economies & give people their jobs back and and and...." but I didn't. She's only 8 after all.

When the check came I handed it to her and said "Did you bring your money?" At which she looked at me like.....uh, nooo....I shrugged and said "well, I guess we'll have to wash the dishes then." Followed by a knowing wink (or some such acknowledgement that I was joking) and peels of laughter. When I was paying the clerk at the counter told her how pretty she is to which she demurely replied "thank you." Oh so polite.

It was another successful get-together. I'm enjoying my time with her more and more and I think she's really very comfortable with me which is great.

Next up; the Mentor Duluth bbq and possibly a children's play this weekend. Pics to be posted later today if I can get my computer at home to upload properly!!

The Theatre....

I picked up Miss M at about 6:45 tonight so we could go to the theatre....I had mentioned last week that we should wear skirts and get a little bit fixed up for going out and when Miss M answered the door she was in a pretty pink dress! Adorable, as usual.

We headed to the show. We were early - which was so nice for me for a change (I usually run soooo late) and we walked around The Depot (where the theatre is - also home to a couple museums and the St. Louis County Historical Society). We talked and walked and it was very nice. We even had someone take a picture of us outside by the Playhouse sign.

The show was a lot of fun. Lots of nice costumes and silly/goofy acting characters, singing and dancing. I think Miss M liked it although it got long and I could tell she was getting a little restless by the end.

It was a really nice outing though. She was very into holding my hand while walking tonight and also liked to lean her head against me during the show which I thought was quite sweet.

I dropped her off just after 10pm! That's past her bedtime. I'm such a terrible influence - hee hee....

Next up? Another hike or perhaps a movie or maybe a craft project....? It all depends on the weather.

Enger Park

Today I picked up Miss M and took her to Enger Park. When I arrived at her house, she was still eating dinner and had completely forgotten what day it was and that I was coming to pick her up! (I think her Mom forgot too). I also realized why she said my house was so clean. *sigh* Regardless, ,Miss M was ready to go in a flash. I told her to wear some "walking around shoes" and she put on some socks and we hit the road.

We visited Enger Tower & Park in Duluth. It's up on the top of the hill and such a beautiful place. The tower itself lets you see a glorious 360 degree view of Duluth. We tried to spot my house, but couldn't; and couldn't see her house due to another hill being in the way.

The park also has lush gardens - beautiful hastas, lillies of many kinds, impatiens, daisies, and numerous things I have no idea what they're called. There is a Japanese garden there as well with lovely sculpted trees and a giant Peace Bell (which we rung many times as we are very very peaceful.).

We also watched a ship leaving the harbor and the lift bridge going up. We journeyed down a trail I new (just happens to now be apart of the Superior Hiking Trail) down to "Twin Ponds." On our way there we noticed some litter and a plastic grocery bag. This turned into the great garbage hunt and we ended up picking up an entire bag full of trash at Twin Ponds! She kept saying how garbage was bad for the planet, and we were doing a good thing and if everyone did just a little work then the world would be a better place. My god. I am already in love with this kid! We had a great conversation. We searched for minnows & turtles in the pond. We skipped, ran, laughed, tickled, joked and instituted a "no whining" policy. We also hopped on rocks and smelled the flowers. It was a really lovely evening.

And to think at first she thought a "park" had to be a place with slides and swings. I'm about to show her a whole new world.

As we were leaving I asked her if she had a water bottle like mine (a nalgene). She said "no." I said that maybe we could get her one so that she could take it when we go hiking. Because, I told her "I plan on doing a lot of hiking with you this summer" She looked at me, eyes lighting up and said "you do?" She was very happy and that made me very happy. Warm fuzzies for everyone.

Next week we're going to go see the musical ONCE UPON A MATTRESS at the Duluth Playhouse. We're looking forward to "dressing up" (just a bit, it's still summer, after all - and it's only theater! not the symphony - ha ha) and "acting proper" (said with an English accent) and obviously being silly.

I think we are a great match. I can't wait to see where this leads.

Just Hanging Out

On Sunday, July 9th Miss M & I hung out for the first time. I picked her up at her house and we headed back to my house to spend a lovely summery afternoon.

On my way to pick Miss M up, I stopped and picked up some summer essentials. A big box of sidewalk chalk (multi colored WITH fun book!), some bubbles and of course, ice cream bars.

Miss M. was just finishing up lunch when I got there with her Mom. We sat on the front steps. They ate and we all chatted. It was sort of a good way to ease into things I think.

When Miss M was finished with her lunch, we headed to my car. Her Mother asked me if I had air bags...why yes, I do! Little did I know that Miss M should then ride in the backseat because she is tiny and air bags can be bad...well, yeah, duh I knew THAT but I just didn't think about it! Something I'm sure to start thinking about more and more now that I'm hanging out with an 8-year-old.

We headed over to my house -easily chatting away. She was excited to see where I lived, so I drove past the front of the house and then back into the alley to park in the garage. The first thing she noticed was that we have two RED CARS! Yes, Steve & I have *nearly* matching red cars (although his Toyota red is a bit different but very close to my Ford red).

We entered the house through the back door. "Your house is BIG" she said...which um, it's not...at all. It's sort of like a dollhouse, but I'm sure to a child who lives in an apartment with two siblings and a Mom it seems big. "Your house is CLEAN" she said...again, well, sort of. I did try to clean up before she came over. She was happy to explore the house and I gave her a tour of the downstairs.

Then I asked her if she would like to....and I pulled out the sidewalk chalks. "Yeah!" We headed out to the front of the house and began to design art on the sidewalk. Something I have not done in AGES. I drew flowers and a sky and she drew a tree with a tree swing. Then she drew pictures of her & I each with a kite (shaped like a cat) wearing matching blue dresses. Very sweet. Our last project was to fill in an entire sidewalk square and sign our artwork. It was a blast.

We also blew bubbles and ran around the yard chasing them. Well, okay - I blew and she ran for the most part. We had lemonade and talked away. We sat in the yard and tried to get the cats to join us (they wouldn't - a little child-shy). We took goofy pictures on PhotoBooth and ate ice cream bars. It was a very pleasant afternoon.

I feel like I haven't PLAYED like that in ages.

At the end of our time together, she didn't want to leave. That made me happy as I feel like on some level I have succeeded. I was mostly nervous about our first time together and it went well...I think we're off to a good start.

Our first Meeting

Miss M & I first met a couple of weeks ago. I was really supposed to only meet her mother that night, but her mother had brought along Miss M and her brother and our meeting went well so we met.

Miss M is adorable and beautiful at the same time. She's 8 years old and has a crazy curly head of hair which I adore. She is sweet and funny and not too shy and her eyes light up when you engage. It's really a cool thing.

We hit it off and so we became Mentor and Mentee.

I'm looking forward to this adventure. You can read all about it here at Me and Miss M.
